Ko'olau String Paper Info
(Click on the above link for info about our String Packaging)

We have three styles of ‘ukulele strings.

1.   Ko’olau Mahana Series.  Mahana is defined as warmth.  Tone and volume is very similar to our Gold Series, but different. Mahana strings are also a very high quality nylon material, clear instead of yellow, and gauging has been slightly modified.  Excellent tone and intonation.

2.   Ko’olau ‘Alohi Series.  ‘Alohi (pronounced A-lo-hee) is defined as brilliance, and rather than nylon, ‘Alohi strings are a dense, hard monofilament material.   Tone is bright and projection is strong.

3.   Ko’olau Gold Series. This is our original and still popular 'ukulele string. Although a nylon, our Gold strings are a different material than any 'ukulele strings on the market. Our difficulty has been the high cost of this particular nylon. We had planned to discontinue this line of strings. But due to a high demand we have decided to continue to production. Ko'olau Gold strings have been described as having the best of both nylon and monofilament. Due to high costs each set will be slightly increased in price.

String packaging has also changed.  To conserve on tree fiber paper, we now use agricultural waste products for our paper.

-         Mahana string packaging is currently packaged with Mango paper, but in the future we will use Coffee paper, made from actual Coffee, grinds, hulls, and pulp from coffee bean production.

-        ‘Alohi string packaging is a pale gray color, made from banana fruit waste.

- Gold string packaging will now be Mango paper. Made from actual mango fruit and skins.

Papers are from Costa Rica, and 3% of all proceeds from our new agricultural paper are donated to children’s orphanages throughout Central and South America.

Each ton of agricultural waste paper saves approximately 17 trees
(there are many more trees cut down each year for paper than for wooden products).
