& ‘Ukulele Retail Price
Our Pono line of guitars and 'ukuleles have set a new benchmark in stringed instrument manufacturing, especially in the world of 'ukuleles. Throughout the world Pono instruments are known for high quality at an affordable price. And in 2009 we will continue in our ongoing endeavor to both improve in quality, and also refine our models and designs. Some models will be discontinued, but a few new ones added. In Hawaiian, the word "Pono" is defined as goodness and excellence. This is the goal we will continue to pursue in the coming year. Using a variety of solid woods, our Pono instruments have come to be recognized for their classic warm tone and ease of playability. As with our Ko'olau line of guitars and 'ukuleles, we retain the same high standard of craftsmanship for Pono instruments. We spend a considerable amount of time and effort in our Indonesian factory, on the island of Java instructing in Ko'olau techniques of instrument making, and insuring our high level of craftsmanship and strict quality control. Besides methods of construction to optimize tone and volume, we stress the importance of cosmetic beauty. All woods are the finest grades available, and all are quartersawn cut, a method that enables woods to maintain strength and durability. Our goal for Pono instruments is the same as it has been for Ko'olau, to produce the highest quality regardless of costs incurred. Obviously the increased cost factor is passed on to our customers. But our customer base is discriminating and selective, not simply "shopping" around for the least expensive instrument on the market. We are proud of the fact that both Ko'olau and Pono instruments have set a new standard of excellence. Especially in the world of 'ukuleles, we have raised the bar, so to speak, using solid woods rather than laminates, and final finishing in a traditional procedure, rather than minimal inexpensive coatings to reduce costs. Along with these quality standards we have admittedly incurred some problems, namely wood related issues. Plywood laminate guitars and 'ukuleles are easy to build, and easy to maintain. Solid woods, though producing better tone, and aging like fine wine, are more sensitive to humidity (or the lack of it) and subsequent warpage, cracking, and seam separation. But we are willing to accept this responsibility. The only way to avoid these problems is to use plywood laminates, or plastics. But we have chosen to stay "solid." We assure our customers a guarantee of satisfaction with a limited warranty. The term "limited" is used to protect against deliberate neglect and abuse. In other words, we expect our customers to properly care for their instruments. We appreciate your suggestions and feedback. Your input has been incorporated into the continued refinement and success of both our Ko'olau and Pono line of instruments. Electronic amplification is available on many Pono models. Our custom designed "Pono" brand pickup is a "passive" piezo saddle transducer. Producing an excellent tone as a stand alone pickup, it can be easily connected to an Outboard Preamp, thus converting it to a "active" system, with enhanced tone and volume. Pono instruments are professionally designed and handcrafted by the Ko'olau Guitar & 'Ukulele Company. Manufacturing is on the island of Java, approximately 100 miles north of Australia. Final adjustments and set-up is on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.
