New: Pono Guitars 2012 Spec Preview

In Hawaiian, the word "Pono" is defined as goodness and excellence. This is the goal we will continue to pursue. Using a variety of solid woods, our Pono instruments have come to be recognized for their classic warm tone and ease of playability.

As with our Ko'olau line of guitars and 'ukuleles, we retain the same high standard of craftsmanship for Pono instruments. We spend a considerable amount of time and effort in our factories outside the US, instructing in Ko'olau techniques of instrument making to insure the same high level of craftsmanship and strict quality control. Besides methods of construction to optimize tone and volume, we stress the importance of cosmetic beauty. All woods are the finest grades available, and all are quartersawn cut, a method that enables woods to maintain strength and durability. Our goal for Pono instruments is the same as it has been for Ko'olau, to produce the highest quality regardless of costs incurred. Obviously the increased cost factor is passed on to our customers. But our customer base is discriminating and selective, not simply "shopping" around for the least expensive instrument on the market. We are proud of the fact that both Ko'olau and Pono instruments have set a new standard of excellence. In the world of 'ukuleles, both Ko'olau and Pono instruments have raised the bar, so to speak, using solid woods rather than laminates, and final finishing with traditional and professional procedures, rather than minimal inexpensive coatings to reduce costs. Along with these quality standards we have admittedly incurred problems, namely wood related issues. Plywood laminate guitars and 'ukuleles are easy to build, and easy to maintain. Solid woods, though producing better tone, and aging like fine wine, are more sensitive to humidity (or the lack of it) and subsequent warpage, cracking, and seam separation. But we are willing to accept this responsibility. The only way to avoid these problems is to use plywood laminates, or plastics. But we have chosen to stay "solid." We assure our customers a guarantee of satisfaction with a limited warranty. The term "limited" is used to protect against deliberate neglect and abuse. In other words, we expect our customers to properly care for their instruments. We appreciate your suggestions and feedback. Your input has been incorporated into the continued refinement and success of both our Ko'olau and Pono line of instruments.

Electronic amplification is available on many Pono models. Our custom designed "Pono" brand pickup is a "passive" piezo saddle transducer. Producing an excellent tone as a stand alone pickup, for enhanced tone and volume our passive Pono pickup can easily be converted to "active" by either modifying the endjack to include a preamp, or by connecting the existing system to an Outboard Preamp, thus converting it to a "active."

Pono instruments are professionally designed and handcrafted. All manufacturing is conducted by and closely supervised by Ko'olau Guitar & Ukulele Company, and then final adjustments and set-up at our factory on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.

Ko'olau & Pono Warranty

Ko'olau and Pono instruments are warranted to the original retail purchaser to be free from defective materials and workmanship. All Ko'olau Guitars and 'Ukuleles have a limited lifetime warranty, to the original owner. All Pono brand instruments are warranted for one year from the date of purchase. Please note that our Warranty is a coverage for faulty craftsmanship, not an extended insurance policy. Purchaser is responsible for any damages or changes due to negligence, mishandling, or climatic weather changes.

Warranty Conditions, Exclusions, and Limitations:

1. Any signs of alteration, absence of serial numbers, abuse, misuse neglect, improper storage, exposure to extreme heat, cold, or accident shall void this warranty. Shipping damages are not covered under this warranty.

2. Electronics: if your Ko'olau or Pono is equipped with an electronic pickup, with or without an EQ system these components shall be warranted to be free of defects in materials or workmanship for a period of one year. Batteries if required are not covered under this warranty.

3. Normal wear and tear, with respect to frets, strings, plating, pick guards and tuning machines are not covered under this warranty. Wood discoloration and final finish coatings are not covered under this warranty.

4. Any warranty claim must be accompanied by retail purchase documentation, proof of purchase from an authorized Ko'olau and Pono dealership, and warranty will be limited to original purchaser only. Purchaser is responsible for all shipping costs.

5. In the event that an instrument is determined by Ko'olau Guitar and 'Ukulele Company to be defective beyond repair due to defects in material or workmanship, Ko'olau Guitar and 'Ukulele Company reserves the right to replace the instrument with the same model or an existing model that would be considered comparable in features and value.

Additional Warranty Information

We continue to provide the highest quality possible, for both our Ko'olau and Pono lines of instruments, however things happen, both in production and afterward due to various climatic changes. We are known for having a very liberal warranty policy but sometimes there is a misunderstanding between what is considered "faulty craftsmanship" and what is actually occurring when woods expand and shrink due to environmental humidity changes.

It is important to note that when bridges or seams come loose due to "faulty craftsmanship" this is usually obvious upon the initial examination at the time of purchase. We will honor such claims (bridge and seam separations) for 30 days from the date of purchase. Any separations, including bridges after 30 days from the day of purchase will not be covered under warranty. This is NOT a revision of our Warranty Policy, but instead a clarification. As with the purchase of any manufactured product, you are responsible to examine your new instrument, both prior to purchase, and within the following few days, and then, if necessary inform us of any problems that exist.

As a comparison, for clarification, the auto industry is well experienced at customer satisfaction. Although manufacturers such as Toyota, Ford, and BMW have an excellent warranty program, if during the warranty period of time the buyer neglects to maintain fluid levels, namely water and
oil, and the engine or transmission become defective, the warranty will then be invalid, and the consumer is responsible for any necessary repairs. So too we are offering a warranty that holds us responsible for issues related to poor quality craftsmanship, including a more limited period of time for defective parts such as tuners, pickups, warping necks, fingerboards, and body woods, however beyond these defects, as with any other manufactured product, the consumer is responsible for proper care and maintenance.

If you have any questions please feel free to call or email. If you need to file a warranty claim, before returning your instrument, please call or email for return authorization.
