Pono Guitars Preview Photos of Pono Guitars Ko'olau Guitar and 'Ukulele Company have been manufacturing Pono 'ukuleles now for many years. In addition to 'ukuleles, we have occasionally produced Pono guitars. We have decided to introduce a new line of professional quality Pono guitars. Craftsmanship is at the same high level as all of our Ko'olau instruments. Construction standards involve meticulously quartersawn solid woods, including mahogany, acacia, and rosewood. And on select models, top soundboards are spruce and cedar. Fingerboards and bridges are Rosewood and Ebony. Pearl for our logo and fingerboard position dots, bone nut and saddle, and all guitars include a custom hardshell case. Upon initial design we have revised model designation a few times. And each time making it even more confusing. So the following will be the Pono Models. There are three sizes, with a numerical wood designation. 10 for Acacia, 20 for Mahogany, and 30 for Rosewood. The letters O, OOO (pronounced triple O), and OOOO (pronounced four O) are being used because they have been in the guitar industry for a long long time. So we felt it would be the easiest to reference. 1. “O” size. 13 1/2 inch body width. There are two distinct "O" styles. The first is a very simply adorned "O" size guitar with body woods made of all Mahogany, or all Acacia. This model (O-10 or O-20) has a solid headstock and joined at the 14th fret. Fun to play, beautiful balanced tone, strong projection, and affordable. A longer neck makes it easier to play at upper frets. Available in a satin finish only. (One additional model in the future will be an OT-10 and OT-20 which is a 4-String Tenor Guitar). The second "O" size guitar is commonly known as a true “Parlor” guitar, since the neck and body are joined at the 12th fret and has a slotted headstock. Although a comfortable small size guitar, it retains a beautiful rich tone and volume. And with the neck and body joined at the 12th fret, string tension is slightly less, and the bridge ends up in a different location, both factors producing a warmer tone. Available with a cutaway body. Satin or gloss finish. 2. "OOO" is the next size up. Commonly named a Concert size guitar. With a 15" body width there is a considerable increase in volume and projection. However, the short scale length of 24.9 produces a warm tone and ease of playability. This model has a solid headstock and available with a cutaway body. Satin or Gloss finish. 3. The largest Pono guitar is a 16" OOOO (four O). In the industry this size is usually 16" to 18" wide. The 16" is the same width as a Dreadnaught guitar. But it has the traditional tight waist of a Concert guitar. A OOOO is also commonly known as a Jumbo or Grand Auditorium. Due to it's size, this model is the loudest. But our design and choice of woods maintains balance. Available with a cutaway body. Satin or Gloss finish. One future model to be added to the OOOO lineup will be our OOOO-20CD SP. It will have unconventional styling for a large body guitar. Rather than having the neck joined at the 14th fret, we are making one of our large body guitars with the body joint at the 12th fret. Tone and balance is completely different. This is the ultimate "large body" guitar for fingerpicking. But even strummed chords produce an unsurpassable warm tone. And to compensate for the loss of access to upper frets, this model will have a cutaway body. Body woods for the OOOO-20CD SP will be Mahogany with a Sitka spruce top. A Rosewood model will also be available. Click on a Body Size below for Full Specs and Pricing
